Tips For Pre Winter Auto Maintenance

Whilst fall is officially here we need to be mindful that Winter will soon come around. With this cold weather coming it is important to follow some tips for car maintenance in order to be ready .

Change Your Oil

Changing your oil should be something that you regularly do throughout the year, (see our list of 100 things every one should be able to do ) but even more so in the winter when temperatures can plummet. Do this before winter arrives and unless you drive over 5000 miles then this change should last the entire season.

2. Apply Wax

Whilst your car exterior might look fine at first glance, there will be a build up of different chemicals, dirt etc that need removing. The Wax is important is it protects the exterior of your car from the upcoming snow and road salt that is used to clear the highway. Applying a quality wax is always recommended in places with harsh winters. Do this before the snow comes.

3. Inspect Battery

It might seem like you have a good functioning battery but be rest assured, as soon as the winter arrives, this will be tested. if your battery is relatively new then you should be fine but for older models then perhaps look at buying a replacement. It can be costly to be stuck outside because the battery won’t start and have to call for a jump start. For diagnoising certain problems then we fully recommend certain tools including the DS708 Scanner. Read the Autel scanner review on Scan Tool Center for more information.

4. Check Your Lights

During this time of year having really bright headlights might not be a neccessity but as soon as them cold winter days and nights come then it is imperative that the lights are good. Replace your bulbs sooner rather than later.  If you live in a place where the winters are harsh then replace your wipers with winter blades and be sure to add de-icing fluid to your washer tank.

5. Tire Safety

Before the snow falls and the ice arrives then check your tires for the depth and grip. This is one of the most important tips to ensuring that you can drive in winter conditions. If you are based in an area of the country with heavy snow then invest in snow tires.

Additional Tip

Anti Freeze is a must for cars in winter. Fill your freeze to the correct level to ensure you don’t have any problems.
