Choosing the Perfect Dog for Single Men

Single life can be lonely at times, and nothing is more rewarding than the company of man’s best friend. Before rushing out and getting one, you need to consider the amount of attention each breed requires and if you can afford the time commitment. Consider a rescue animal before going to the pet shop as these dogs are usually thrilled to be given a good home and are very affectionate. However, be sure to find out about any special circumstances and needs they have and determine whether you are up to it. Here are some breeds you may want to consider.

Huskies

These beautiful dogs are ideal if you spend a lot of time outdoors. They are perfect for the adventurous single guy who loves hiking, cycling or running. Siberian Huskies are well-known for their work as sled dogs, but they are family animals as well, being good with children and adults alike. Remember that as active as your Husky is, they do not tolerate the heat well. When going out for exercise, always select weather where the humidity is low.

Labradors

A Labrador is the dog most commonly owned in the USA, so they are suitable for anyone. They need lots of exercise, which means you should only get one of you can take it for several walks a day or have a large enough yard where the two of you can play together. Labradors are very affectionate, intelligent animals. This is your perfect wingman to go to the park with if you are hoping to meet someone.

The downside of this breed is that they are susceptible to developing hip dysplasia; arthritis in dogs is also found in chihuahuas, Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, and Yorkshire Terriers. For arthritis in dogs, Native Pet manufactures Omega Oil, using all-natural ingredients. They supply products for other conditions too, and meals for feeding your pet.

English Bulldog

An English Bulldog has a face you cannot help but love. This means that potential girlfriends will also be bowled over by your utterly adorable pet. English Bulldogs are essentially lazy if you are not that into exercising yourself. They love to cuddle up with you on the couch to watch your favourite sports.

Chihuahua

At six to nine inches in height and weighing in at 3.3 – 6.6 pounds, a Chihuahua is a little scrap of a thing until confronted by a stranger. Then she is all attack mode. But that is only to protect you. Despite this show of bravado, a Chihuahua is easily frightened and should never be yelled at. They are also enormously sensitive to the cold. She should be kept indoors except when you take her outside and stay with her.

Boxer

If you are looking for a dog with plenty of personality, you should consider a Boxer. They are very playful animals with really goofy expressions. Some of the words that can be used to describe them are intelligent, confident, energetic, devoted, loyal, brave, friendly, and cheerful. For a single guy who spends too much time in his mind, a Boxer will always be ready to get you out of a mood and into the garden for some rough and tumble.

Boxers do not like to be left home alone. Although they play well with other pets in the family, they tend to chase the neighborhood cats and dogs. Make sure your yard can contain the animal and that your schedule allows you to spend time with him.

Bernese Mountain Dog

You won’t find a more stunning dog than the Bernese Mountain Dog with that gorgeous, long coat which is made up of three colors: pure black, snow-white, and rust. Every single woman in the park will rush over to pet him. These dogs are extremely loyal to their owners and tend to be somewhat aloof with everyone else. Although their shoulder height can reach up to 27 inches, making them somewhat imposing, they are also very gentle.

Doberman

A Doberman is a family dog before all else. It will remain the perfect dog through bachelorhood and into getting married and having children. They are fierce guard dogs and see children as their puppies to be protected at all costs. Dobermans are obedient, loyal, and highly intelligent. The best age to get your Doberman puppy is at ten weeks. Prior to that, they need the time with the rest of the litter to learn socializing and other skills.

Still Not Sure If a Dog Is Right for You?

Having looked at various breeds, you may have decided that a dog doesn’t fit in with your busy schedule but that you still want a pet. There are a few other alternatives that may suit you.

Cats are generally low maintenance, independent, and content as long as they are fed a healthy diet, and have access to fresh water, somewhere comfortable to sleep, and attention on their terms. While some breeds can be finicky and more demanding, there are so many to choose from that you are sure to find the perfect pet.

Rabbits make cute pets and require little attention. They do need rabbit food pellets as their staple diet if you want your pet to remain healthy. Rabbits can be kept indoors but need a sleeping and toilet area. Avoid spots with electrical cables which they may chew. They can get heatstroke so their accommodation must be fairly cool.

Fish are suitable if you don’t have much time to play with a pet. They are also very relaxing to sit and watch for hours. If your thoughts are turning to owning snakes, do your research as each breed has different needs. You will have to be comfortable with feeding your snake live food, or alternatively, frozen mice.

Having gone through a few options of dogs and alternate pets to think about, you should be starting to get an idea of how important it is to choose an animal that matches your lifestyle and personality. But above all, a pet is there to be loved, so do consider saving an animal from the pound and not only looking at the pure breeds.
