If your travels take you to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, check out the 41 Berangan hotel – it’s made entirely out of shipping containers. The folding containers are cheap, recyclable and immensely popular.

41 Berangan has 9 rooms around a main complex and two additional larger 20-foot courtyard rooms that have garden views.

The rooms, as you might imagine, are pretty sparse but functional. Beds are made from recyclable paper pallets and guests have Internet access. Because of the low-cost of building the hotel, rooms start at just $23 per night.

You can check out more photos at the 41 Berangan hotel website.

Old shipping crates are being used in an increasing number of buildings, ranging from schools to condo lofts. Building with old containers is significantly cheaper than using traditional building materials.

Would you sleep in a shipping container or is the idea just too creepy?

I would definitely stay in a storage container hotel, so long as there were bathrooms and electricity. These things are pretty similar to hostels, and if they are in the same price range then will probably get a lot of business.

Travelodge has one of this kind of container hotel. The price is quite cheaper than normal budget hotel. But the people couldn’t figure out it is made by container. There is a company ” Agson Engineers” produce this kind of luxury prefabricated container modular hotel in China, and sell it to UK. I visit the room when I was in Shanghai. It is really amazing room. 15sqm, contains everything. Please see

It seems the prefab container modular hotel is a trend for hotel chain business.

i would! esp if it is clean! quite cool concept of using recycled materials .. think the travel industry should put more effort in this area rather than just telling us not to wash our towels everyday.
