Top 10 Guy Movies of 2008
As 2008 draws to a close, it's time to rate the top 10 guy movies of the year. JAGT dutifully sat through dozens of stinkers - The Love Guru anyone? - to find the cream of the crop, the very best in manly entertainment. These were the movies that had the flash, action, and yes, women to keep any guy riveted to his seat.
Here are the winners in reverse order:
10. RocknRolla

Directed by Guy Ritchie, aka Madonna's (ex) hubby, RocknRolla successfully harkens back to Ritchie's earlier Snatch. The film didn't do much at the box office, but is well worth a look. RocknRolla, which follows the capers of a group of hapless cockney crooks, generates a frenetic, humorous edge.
9. Wanted

Based on Mark Millar?s excellent graphic novel series, Wanted tells the tale of 25-year-old Wesley Gibson, an apathetic nobody who is transformed into a badass enforcer of justice. The film is over-the-top insanity and adrenaline-inducing fun from start to finish. As a bonus, it features Angelina Jolie looking sexier than ever.
8. The Incredible Hulk

Starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and the always lovely Liv Tyler, The Incredible Hulk breathed new life into this fledgling franchise. Don't look to this movie for high-brow entertainment, but if you want great popcorn fare, this fits the bill perfectly.
7. The Bank Job

Boobs, drugs, action, robbery and black power - what's not to like? Starring Jason Statham (from Transporter and The Italian Job), this thriller deftly mixes corruption with murder and sexual scandal. This fast-paced, well written movie is based on a true story of a heist in 1970s England.
6. Pineapple Express

One of only two straight-up comedies in the top 10, Pineapple Express features the ever reliable Seth Rogan as - here's a stretch - a stoner and James Franco as his kind hearted dealer. The movie cleverly pokes fun at action movie cliches while maintaining a pitch perfect stoner babble throughout.
5. Quantum of Solace

Brutal and breathless. Not quite at the same level as the excellent Casino Royale, James Bond still made a strong showing this year. Daniel Craig continues to be the coolest dude on earth, exuding quiet masculinity in every frame.
4. Tropic Thunder

Ben Stiller breaks out of his usual put-upon everyman role to create one of the most subversively funny movies of the year. Stellar cameos from Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise keep Tropic Thunder humming along.
3. In Bruges
This movie didn't receive much notice when it opened, but it's well worth seeing. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes all brilliantly play their main roles. In Bruges winningly mixes dark wit with real tragedy - not an easy feat for any movie. Plus, In Bruges gets the award for most sweartasic movie of the year - there's almost no scene that's not rife with obscenity.
2. Iron Man
Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man was a superhero movie that even non-comics fans enjoyed. Downey's quirky charisma elevated Iron Man beyond the typical summer blockbuster fare. Equal parts brains and brawn, the movie delivered dazzling action sequences and surprisingly funny comedic moments.
1. The Dark Knight
The #1 box office movie of 2008 is also the #1 guy movie of the year. Christian Bale is a brooding Batman and Heath Ledger in a final role brilliantly creates a truly scary, psychopathic Joker. Did The Dark Knight live up to the endless hype? Nope. But it did provide enough gripping action and twisted characters to entertain the most discriminating guy.
Honorable mentions this year go to Rambo, The Hammer
, Transporter 3
, and The Punisher
. These weren't great movies, but if you're looking for lots of violence and gun play, they'll do just fine.
If you missed any of these movies in the theater, most of them are available on DVD. Also, check out JAGT's list of the 100 movies every guy must see, and 10 guy movies you've probably never seen.
