Despite the immediacy of the Internet, magazine covers still have the ability to shock and surprise us. The folks at Webdesigner Depot have put together an interesting list of the most controversial covers of all time and while some may be familiar, there are lots of surprises.
The Rolling Stone issue, above, with John Lennon and Yoko Ono was named the most popular magazine cover of the last 40 years by the American Society of Magazine Publishers. Annie Leibovitz took the shot just hours before Lennon was gunned down in front of his apartment building in New York City.
In the days before Photoshop, this National Lampoon cover raised more than a few eyebrows:

When it first came out, this Vanity Fair cover – shot again by Annie Leibovitz – was denounced as outrageous and offensive. But it started a trend of countless celebrity pregnancy shots and put Demi Moore’s career into overdrive.

This Entertainment Weekly cover of the Dixie Chicks came out after they criticized then-President Bush for invading Iraq. Imagine that.
