Do cheesy pick-up lines actually work to meet women? They do when they show off your sense of humor, according to a new survey.

Researchers found six out of ten ladies are more likely to fall for a man if he breaks the ice with a light-hearted one-liner. It also emerged that four out of ten women are still dating or are married to a man who first approached them with a funny quip.

But not every line works – the report found there are do’s and don’ts in the dating game.

Lines such as ‘Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?’, and ”Apart from being beautiful, what do you do for a living?’ worked ”most of the time”.

But ‘Do you have a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes’, and ‘Is there a Rainbow, because you’re the treasure I’ve been searching for.’ were likely to end up in red-faced failure because they were ”too over the top”.

It also emerged that seven out of ten women like being chatted up while out with friends as it gives their confidence a boost – as long as the potential suitor is good looking.

A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which questioned 4,000 adults, said: ”Women like a guy with a sense of humour and a cheesy chat-up line is a good way of displaying that.

So without further delay, here are ten pick-up lines that work and ten that don’t, according to the survey:

TEN CHEESY CHAT UP LINES WHICH DO WORK

1. ‘Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?’

2. ‘I have had a really bad day and it always makes me feel better to see a pretty girl smile. So, would you smile for me?’

3. ‘Apart from being beautiful, what do you do for a living?’

4. ‘Shall we talk or continue flirting from a distance?’

5. ‘I seem to have lost my number, can I have yours instead?’

6. ‘Hi, I just wanted to give you the satisfaction of turning me down; go ahead say no.’

7. ‘Is it hot in here or is it just you?’

8. ‘Do you mind if I stare at you up close instead of from across the room?’

9. ‘Did it hurt when you fell out of heaven?’

10. ‘There must be something wrong with my eyes, I can’t take them off you.’

TEN CHEESY CHAT UP LINES WHICH DON’T

2. ‘I guess you can kiss heaven goodbye. Because it has got to be a sin to look that good.’

5. ‘Do you have a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes.’

6. ‘Is there a rainbow, because you’re the treasure I’ve been searching for.’

7. Hello, I’m a thief, and I’m here to steal your heart.’

8. I hope you know CPR? Because you take my breath away.’
