Are These The Worst People In The World?
People are camped outside a Best Buy NINE DAYS before Black Friday, so they can be the first ones through the door on the biggest shopping day of the year. WHY? There's no XBox, no Tickle Me Elmo, not even a Furby to speak of. Are they worried that they're going that Best Buy is going to run out of DVD players?
I try not to be unduly negative, but what the hell is wrong with these people? What's lacking in their lives that they want to sit outside for nine days (missing Thanksgiving, mind you) to have access to the same stuff at the same price that I will be able to get at noon that day. Or the next, or two weeks from then.
They claim "We're all students, and we've got to pinch a penny." Well, that may be true, but don't student also have to go to class through next Tuesday? Here's a fun exercise: find out how much they think they're going to save by camping out there (assuming they're going to save anything more than someone who strolls on in later tha afternoon, which they won't). Let's say they're saving $1,000, which is a ridiculous overestimate.
Then, let's say that they're there for nine days (even though some have been there for as long as twelve). And let's say that there are twenty-four hours in a day (because there are). Here what were gonna do: We're dividing $1,000 by 216 hours. That gives us about $4.60 an hour that they're "earning," even though they're really not saving a dime by doing this.
Now, they're in Florida (shocking, I know) where minimum wage is $7.67 per hour. So not only would they be better off working even the most menial job during that period, but they would actually contribute a service to the world rather than act as human paperweights.
I'm shopping online so I can avoid these people.
