I’m not sure why this wasn’t broadcast on ESPN, but in case you missed it, the North American Wife Carrying Championship was held last weekend in Newry, Maine. 41 teams from 11 states competed over a course featuring a muddy water hole and log obstacles.

The winners were Dave and Lacey Castro of Lewiston, Maine. The lucky couple received the wife’s weight in beer (woo-hoo!) and five times her poundage in cash. In the Castro’s that comes to $485.

The Castros covered the 278-yard course in 54.45 seconds. They now move on to the world championships in Finland next July.

This was the 10th annual wife carrying contest. And just to show that they aren’t sexist, the contest allows the woman to carry her husband through the course if they choose.
