While this story is both interesting and terrible, the real takeaway here is the picture. Yuck. I have absolutely no problem believing that anyone who can make themselves look so awful and unhealthy would subject their child to the same thing to a) live up to the same insane beauty ideal that they believe in or b) just do it so they can feel better about themself.

She looks like a walking melanoma case study. Disgusting. She's not even orange. She's dark, dark brown. In New Jersey, it's illegal to allow anyone under 14 years old to use tanning beds. When the daughter showed up at school with a sunburn, she told officials how she got it, and they rightfully called the police. Shortly thereafter, the mom was arrested. 

The mom has admitted to taking her daughter to the tanning salon, but denied allowing her to use the beds themselves. I'm skeptical. Very. 

On the upside, the mom is very, very tan, which I'm pretty sure is what she was going for this whole time.
