Americans Drink Just Under Two Sodas Per Day, On Average
While that number seems sorta high, bear in mind that tons of people aren't drinking ANY sodas, so the people that are are buoying that average by drinking four or six or eight per day. Way to pick up the slack, World of Warcraft players!
The most surprising aspect of this story is that the just-under-two-per-day average is a huge decrease from where America was and represents a "crisis" to the soda manufacturers. That NYT article claims that Coke and Pepsi are having to rely more on juices and bottled water to keep their sales figures up. Hmm. Don't really see what the problem is.
Of course, what's bad news for soda companies is good news for the collective health of the American public. While two sodas a day is nothing to pat ourselves on the back about, many believe that this trend isn't close to bottoming out, and that America may slowly be shifting away from soda altogether. Which is a good thing, as the last time we reported on soda consumption in Just A Guy Thing, we had THIS to say about it.
America: getting slightly less fat, one unconsumed soda at a time.
