Five Unhealthy “Healthy” Snacks

Health

It’s tough to eat well, especially when it comes to snacking. It’s even harder when snacks that we think of being healthy actually turn out to be loaded with fat or calories.

Newsweek recently published a list of five supposedly healthy snacks that aren’t so healthy:

1. Snapea Crisps dried veggies. These are made from sun-dried peas – sounds achingly healthy, right? No so fast: a one once serving has 150 calories and 8 grams of fat which is just as bad as the same serving size of Doritos. And something tells me that Doritos are probably a tad more tasty than dried peas.

2. Terra Chips. Again, veggie chips sound healthy, but not so. One serving is just as bad as those Doritos. At least Terra Chips are tastier than the peas.

3. Granola bars. While granola bars do have some good stuff in them like grains, they’re also loaded with sugar and syrup. Nature Valley’s vanilla nut granola bars contain 7 grams of fat, 190 calories, and 11 grams of sugar. Eating a bowl of Lucky Charms is actually better for you.

4. Dried fruit. This was probably the biggest surprise on the list. If fruit is good for you, how can dried fruit be bad? Turns out that it takes a lot more dried fruit to fill you up because of the lack of water, so you eat more. Five dried pear halves have 229 calories!

5. Bran muffins. These are loaded with fat, sugar and calories. One medium bran muffin contains 305 calories, 8.4 grams of fat, and 9.3 grams of sugar. Yikes! You amazingly get fewer calories from a old-fashioned cake donut from Dunkin’ Donuts.
