Douche of the Day: Ryan Dunn
First off, I liked Ryan Dunn very much. He was my favorite member of the "Jackass" troupe and he never failed to make me laugh. I never met him, but he seemed like a good guy, making me very happy for his success.
But the guy was clearly reckless behind the wheel in more ways than one. If he had just killed himself, that would be one thing. He would have still been putting people at risk by driving drunk and recklessly, but at least he wouldn't have hurt anyone. Sadly, that wasn't the case. His passenger, a friend or admirer, didn't make that decision, but he probably knew how drunk Dunn was.
If it was a lapse in judgment, it would be a forgivable tragedy, but it clearly wasn't. Dunn had gotten a DUI before in 2006 and had received 23 traffic violations. Who the hell thought giving this guy a 190-mph Porsche was a good idea? Frankly, I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.
I apologize for the lack of levity in this post. I'm equal parts sad and angry. This is the second and last post on the subject. It's a shitty situation, but the cliche rings true: if someone learns to exercise some decent judgment in a similar circumstance, perhaps these deaths won't be in vain.
